Im trying to rigid tap 1/2 NPT in my VMC. I have a 20 hp single speed spindle and it doesn't seem to have enough torque to drive the 1/2" NPT tap. My spindle speed is 700 rpm. The material is 6061. The hole dia is 23/ size from a tap chartbut it is a straight hole and once the tap reaches a certain depth, then the spindle stalls.

Thispage provided the thread dimensions of 1 - 11 1/2 NPTF. NPTF stands for National Pipe Thread Fuel, based on ASTM B1.20.3. It is also called Dryseal Pipe Thread. It is a variation of the more popular NPT thread standard based on ASTM B1.20.1. Learn more about NPTF and the difference between NPTF and NPT.

Therefore the tapping depth should be the approx. 5 threads for the “hand tight”, 3 threads for “wrench tight”, and 4 threads for the chamfer, or approx. 12 threads total. We call this the “12 thread count”. In other words, count approximately 12 threads back from the front of the tap. This is the position (thread size) that should

NPS- American National Standard Straight Pipe Thread. Sizes and dimensions of pipes and tubes, and their fittings - inside and outside diameter, weight and more. Thread data
Pipethread sizes are based on an inside diameter (ID) or flow size. For example, “1/2–14 NPT” identifies a pipe thread with a nominal inside diameter of 1/2 inch and 14 threads to the inch, made according to the NPT standard. If “LH” is added, the pipe has a left hand thread. The most common global pipe thread forms are:

Step1 – Male Threads v. Female Threads. First, you’ll need to identify whether the thread type is male or female. Take a look at where the threads are located. If they’re on the outside of the thread, it’s a male thread. If they’re on the inside of the thread, it’s a female thread.
